To eliminate fleas from your pet, and control any re-infestation with fleas, the fleas need to be eliminated from the home environment as well.

Treating the Environment

• Treat the house with appropriate and effective environmental sprays, foggers and bombs - be sure to use these products in all the areas your pet spends time - inside and outside
• Vacuum regularly - especially under furniture - seal and throw out vacuum bags after each vacuum
• Regularly wash pet bedding and soft toys

The process of eradicating fleas from your home environment can take several months, but the right combination of treatments, done safely and correctly, will end your flea problem.

Adult Fleas

• Freshly hatched fleas are small, dark and flat bodied.
• Adult fleas are larger and lighter in colour.
• We tend to see adult fleas more readily because they live on our pets - feeding, breeding and laying eggs.
• Adult fleas account for less than 5% of the flea population in a home

Eggs

• Adult female flea lays eggs in your pet's fur.
• The eggs are white in colour and smaller than a grain of sand
• The eggs fall off your pet allowing them to be disbursed throughout the home environment
• Will take 2 days - 2 weeks to hatch out as larvae
• Eggs represent about 50 % of the flea population present in your home environment.

Larvae

• Flea larvae can be up to ¼ inch long and are pale (almost see-through) and legless.
• They eat pre-digested blood, passed by adult fleas into the environment, along with other organic debris in your home environment.
• The emerging larvae develop over several weeks, then form a cocooned pupae stage
• Larvae make up about 35% of the flea population in your home environment

Pupae

• The pupae lies protected inside the cocoon for several days, weeks, months or years before emerging as an adult flea
• The cocoons lie under furniture, deep in the carpet pile, between floorboards or in suitable substrate outside in your home environment.
• The pupae stage accounts for about 10 % of the flea population in your home environment
