Essential Remedies Every Dog Owner Needs
When your dog has an accident like getting stung by a bee, or a bleeding dog nail, first aid items should be kept on hand at home to help manage it. Follow these steps for effective wound management for dogs.
Step 1: Remove any foregn objects, such as a stinger from a bee sting or glass using tweezers and stop any bleeding with a clean compress or gauze.
Step 2: Clean the wound. The affected area should be properly cleaned with a saline solution or mild soap with warm water to remove any dirt or blood.
Step 3: Disinfect the wound. Apply an antiseptic cream, gel or spray to help to eliminate any bacteria that may lead to infections.
Step 4: Apply a soothing agent to help calm the area and make your pet more comfortable.
Step 5: Cover the open wound with a gauze dressing and a bandage.
Step 6: Potentially use a dog E-collar. Most dogs will be unable to stop themselves from licking/biting the affected area. Consider an e-collar as a safe way to prevent them from further aggravating the wound and extending the healing process.
Check the wound daily and always consult with your veterinarian in the case of a contaminated wound, a deep wound or a wound that is not healing.
Why Does Your Dog Need Sunscreen?
Dogs are subject to the same consequences of sun exposure as humans. That includes sunburn and other serious health problems like skin cancer. Although their fur does protect them to an extent, it is still essential to apply sunscreen for dogs when venturing outdoors.
Sunscreen sticks, creams or wipes are a great safety measure to protect your pet from developing sun-related medical issues.
